Royal Ascot 2016

One of the biggest and most anticipated sporting events of the year is just around the corner. On Tuesday 14th June we will see Ascot Racecourse open its doors for 5 days for Britain’s most valuable race meeting, attracting many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for more than £6.5 million in prize money. Since being founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, Royal Ascot has become a unique event in both the sporting calendar, and in fashion and style. Known for its extensive parade of elaborate hats, dresses and much more, the traditional dress code is as famous as the Royal Ascot meeting itself, the culmination of over 300 years of pageantry and style.

Every year approximately 400 helicopters and 1000 limos attend the 179 acres of land for the impressive event. Throughout the 5 days roughly 300,000 race goers will attend Royal Ascot, consuming over 51,000 bottles of Champagne, 160,000 glasses of Pimm’s, 131,000 pints of beer and 42,000 bottles of wine. A highlight in the social calendar, Royal Ascot is an event brimming with tradition. The Queen has attended every Royal Meeting during her reign and the Royal Procession is always an iconic moment to herald the start of every race day. She is a well-known dedicated racehorse enthusiast and has had 22 winners, including in 2013 when she watched her horse, Estimate, triumph the Gold Cup.

If you are lucky enough to be attending Royal Ascot this June, join us at Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa for a Traditional Afternoon Tea overlooking the River Thames on our picturesque riverside terrace. Or enjoy dinner with a spectacular view in the Thames View Restaurant and treat yourself to some of our award winning cuisine.
