Royal Windsor Horse Show 2017

Hosted in the private grounds of Windsor Castle, the UK’s largest outdoor horse show will take place from 10th May to 14th May this year. First started in 1943 to help raise funds for the war effort, Royal Windsor Horse Show has continued to run every year since then. Part of the ‘Wings for Victory’ campaign, Windsor raised a whopping £400,000 through various events around the town.  Previously known as The Windsor Horse and Dog show, it will feature five days of equestrian competitions, international displays and exceptional sports entertainment. Show jumping is the most popular amongst the crowd, with carriage driving and displays by working dogs being next in line. If you’re bringing the kids along, make sure they catch the pony races and their junior riders, so you don’t have to worry about keeping them entertained.

Covering all aspects of horsemanship and country life in general, the prestigious show has a special place in the heart of Windsor. In recent years, the show has usually ended with a magnificent fireworks display which is a fantastic experience for the crowd, especially against the backdrop of the floodlit Windsor Castle. If you are planning on visiting Windsor in Spring, make sure the show is on your bucket list. Plan your day around the show’s schedule so you don’t miss on any of the special competitions. Also, if you are a fan of the double Olympic gold medallist Nick Skelton, watch him show jumping for the last time in the Castle Arena on 14th May, after which he chooses to retire.

And now, time for a fun fact! Did you know dogs have not been allowed on the grounds since 1944? A lurcher stole a piece of chicken from King George V’s lunch plate, leading to the committee banning them!
